Australia’s St Columba Anglican School Deploys a Virtualised Learning Environment with Parallels Desktop for Mac Enterprise Edition

No. 1-selling software for running Windows applications on a Mac provides easy configuration and seamless integration supporting school’s Bring Your Own Technology policy

Sydney, Australia – 19 March 2013 – Parallels today announced St Columba Anglican School (SCAS) has become one of the first schools in Australia to deploy Parallels Desktop for Mac Enterprise Edition. With the deployment, the school aims to enable and strengthen its Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) policy.

Located in Port Macquarie, New South Wales, SCAS is one of the Australian education sector’s pioneers in technology and innovation, having implemented its BYOT policy 10 years ago with the teaching staff. The school prefers using the term BYOT over the more popular Bring Your Own Device or BYOD, as it believes BYOD restricts the personalization element by allowing for devices only as opposed to giving them the freedom to choose from a variety of software or hardware solutions. Today, this strategy has been extended to the students too.

With the proliferation of mobile devices such as laptops, tablets, apps and smartphones, the BYOT trend is fast becoming part of classrooms in Australian schools and has contributed to a richer, more exciting learning experience for students. BYOT empowers the school to incorporate the latest technology into the classroom, so that teachers can provide a personalised education and enhance student engagement.

With a liberal BYOT policy, the school needed a solution that would support the two most popular operating systems, Microsoft’s Windows and Apple’s OS X, and make working in both worlds integrated and easy.

“As a pioneer in innovative learning, St Columba Anglican School is committed to continually transforming the classroom experience for students, and encouraging technological diversity is central to this commitment,” said Matt Richards, E-Learning Leader, St Columba Anglican School. “About 80 percent of our secondary students are using Macs to access their schoolwork and we believe we don’t have to stop there. We want to encourage them to go further and use a variety of hardware, operating systems and software that best meets their evolving needs. This is one of the main reasons why we incorporated Parallels Desktop for Mac Enterprise Edition in our BYOT plans.”

“With Parallels Desktop for Mac Enterprise Edition, we are confident that by the end of 2013, all of our secondary students from year 6 to year 12 will have embraced BYOT,” added Richards.

The No. 1-selling and award-winning Parallels Desktop for Mac software delivers performance and speed with a seamless interface that enables the school to empower students and teachers to use the best software applications, regardless of operating system, on one computer. Parallels Desktop enables Mac users to simultaneously run Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows XP, Google Chrome OS, Mountain Lion as a guest and more, so they can be productive and successful in any situation.

The school’s BYOT strategy allows it to focus on providing the right technology foundations that will enhance the curriculum, the students’ learning experience and the school’s educational standards. With the plethora of technologies, it is crucial that staff and students using Macs are able to access files and programs that operate across both Windows and Mac without compromising performance.

“Schools, business and enterprises of all sizes are constantly looking to invest in technology solutions that meet their long term needs. This innovative BYOT policy encourages access to platforms and related solutions anytime, anywhere and from any device for both students and teachers to share and collaborate with others. Parallels Desktop for Mac Enterprise Edition enables this to happen. As technologies evolve, there is an increased demand in the Australian market for a solution that balances the diversity of devices with functionality, and Parallels Desktop for Mac provides just that stability in a diverse environment,” said David Dzienciol, Regional Vice President and General Manager Parallels in Asia Pacific.
