Case study illustrates easy, no cost roll out of virtual desktops with Parallels ThinClientServer and VMware

Frankfurt, Germany, 4 August 2006 – Parallels, formerly 2X Software today published a guide demonstrating how to implement desktop virtualization within a company at no extra cost. Using VMware server and Parallels ThinClientServer, companies can convert existing desktops to thin clients, and have them connect to a virtual machine on one, or more, central VMware servers. This solution is based on Parallels ThinClientServer PXES edition, obtainable for free, and VMware server, also available at no cost. The virtual desktop runs Windows XP, and can use the same license already in use by the company.

"We believe that centrally managed virtual desktops, published to thin clients, are the future. They are the most efficient way to trim IT costs by reducing the time spent managing and securing desktop PCs," said Nikolaos Makris, Parallels President.

WTC successfully combines VMware and Parallels ThinClientServer

Wamego Telecommunications Co. (WTC) uses Parallels ThinClientServer for Windows installed on a host with VMware ESX Server. The software integrates with Active Directory for the login and access, whilst user connections and hardware settings can be adjusted so the software on the server is directed to the thin client. Users are directed to the appropriate terminal server, depending on the way an account is set up on the thin client server.

A case study outlining WTC’s implementation of VMware with Parallels ThinClientServer, is available at  http://www.vmware.com/customers/stories/wtc_vdi.html

"I was looking for a product that would allow me to RDP to a VM XP box. I came across Parallels ThinClientServer which handles authentication and control over which user can connect where, using a very nice web interface. The install was easy. I setup a whole Parallels system in VMware Workstation in about an hour. It worked like a champ... first time,” said Jim Jones, Network Administrator at WTC Communications.
