Top IT Trends 2017 And What You Should Expect to See

IT trends 2017IT Trends 2017 – Every year, IT leaders have to take a step back to assess their organizations’ strategies and actions in the context of global technology development. If IT leaders take a proactive stance toward technology changes, they will craft more successful long-term strategies and achieve more while remaining within budget. In the past year, Gartner, Inc., the world’s leading information technology research and advisory company, suggested four key trends to help IT leaders in 2017.

Top IT Trends 2017

Gartner focused on the top technology trends in their 2017 projections ranging from Artificial Intelligence to Virtual Reality.  While technology changes will infiltrate all industries in the global economy, these are the trends that will influence the future of the IT industry the most.

Digital Twins

Last year, it was reported many organizations will be retiring their physical networks to move into the cloud. However, for various reasons, this option is not practical for all IT networks. IT managers who still work with on-premises networks with physical infrastructures will increasingly use an emerging technology: digital twins.

The term “digital twin” refers to a software model of a system or physical object with sensor data that is used to interpret its state, and ultimately make corrections and improvements. During the next three to five years, digital twins will represent hundreds of millions of systems and objects. IT administrators using digital twins will be able to proactively repair and plan for equipment changes, create predictions about failure points, and increase efficiency in their operations. The use of digital twins will bring the physical and digital worlds closer together.

Mesh App and Service Architecture

Another trend for 2017 is the convergence of apps across platforms such as mobile, web, desktop, and IoT that are connected in back-end services into one single “application.” This is known as mesh app and service architecture (MASA). Services are encapsulated by architecture with APIs to balance the demand for organizational agility and scalability. Users on MASA have an optimized solution for targeted endpoints in the digital mesh, and experience consistency even when channels are changed.

Digital Technology Platforms

Further, organizations will mix the basic digital building blocks. Gartner identified the five major platforms that will encourage digital business models: information systems, customer experience, analytics and intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), and business ecosystems. From 2017 onward, organizations will mix certain combinations of these digital building blocks. These will be the most important facilitators for digital businesses growing and expanding around the globe.

Adaptive Security Architecture

Security concerns never die. Intelligent digital meshes powered by AI and machine learning will be used to empower security protection for IoT and other digital technology platforms. Ultimately, this security architecture design means that protection measures will become more fluid and adaptive to increasingly sophisticated threats.

“Monitoring user and entity behavior is a critical addition that is particularly needed in IoT scenarios,” said David Cearley, vice president and Gartner Fellow. “However, the IoT edge is a new frontier for many IT security professionals, creating new vulnerability areas and often requiring new remediation tools and processes that must be factored into IoT platform efforts.”

Going forward, enterprises will need to implement a multilayered security approach that actively monitors and uses analytics on user and entity behavior to recognize abnormalities and protect against threats as they arise in real time.
