Parallels Case Study – Sofrigam SA

“Today, in a sector where protection of Sofrigam’s intellectual property is crucial, the need for data security to protect against hacking is vital, nomadic computing is necessary, and scalability is an absolute essential, Parallels made it possible to step up to the mark.” Alexis Marchand, Technical Director, SOFRIGAM

SOFRIGAM uses Parallels Solutions to share IT infrastructure between two sites while allowing a vast array of heterogeneous devices to remotely access company resources cost-effectively

Company Overview

SOFRIGAM is a leading manufacturer of insulated and refrigerated packaging in Europe. The company was founded by an industrial pharmacist in 1979 and quickly became a leader in the European packaging market. Sofrigam created the Frizbox (pallet shipper) refrigerated product in 2001 that effectively dealt with cold chain consignment problems experienced by the pharmaceutical industry. In addition, the company offers customized services to suit the cold logistics requirements of each customer. Comprehensive cold chain packaging solutions from Sofrigam are cost-effective and secure.

Sofrigam Data Security Parallels – The Challenge

Initially, Sofrigam was using a single, terminal, non-virtualized server with fat clients at a single site in Nanterre. Later, the company organically progressed to operate in two sites, one in Reuil-Malmaison (head office) and the other at Monchy-le-Preux and the IT infrastructure required a complete reorganization. The aim of this reorganization was to set up:
• Interconnection between sites,
• An overhaul of backup management,
• An inter-site disaster recovery plan,
• Outsourced IT facilities management,
• IT organization able to respond to Sofrigam’s need for scalability to sustain its growth.

The company was looking for secure virtualization solutions that are cost-effective, and easy to deploy and manage, to enable a smoother reorganization.

Sofrigam Data Security Parallels – The Solution

The company looked at Citrix and VMWare VDI solutions. However, Parallels was selected for the good value offered, customization capabilities in relation to implementation, and maintenance cost as compared to others.

Parallels products were used for thin client application and desktop publishing to remotely publish critical services like Divalto ERP, SQL Server, HR software package, logistics tools, BI, EDM, project management, Office Suite, and instant messaging. Three front-end RDS servers on Windows 2008 and several application servers on Windows 2003 and Windows 2008 were deployed. KVM and OpenVZ virtualization solutions were used for some services under Linux, and virtual SAN under DRBD on NEC and Dell hardware.
Parallels solutions were adopted as part of the global reorganization project, with the setting up of a comprehensive IT facilities management contract with ASPerience.

Sofrigam Data Security Parallels –  Key Benefits

By deploying Parallels Remote Application Server, SOFRIGAM realized that sharing of IT infrastructure between two sites could be set up simply, without any hassles. With efficient integration of Active Directory, detailed management of access rights to applications, printers and files was easily set up. Moreover, a vast array of devices like iOS, Android and MAC are supported. The universal printing feature eliminates the installation of printer drivers on client systems. Parallels solutions are highly scalable, secure, efficient and cost-effective.
