I just installed version 9 on my new iMac, and it runs quite well, much smoother and faster than the earlier version 6? that I installed on on older MacBook Pro several years ago. The only glitch after the new installation was an interminable upgrade of Windows 7 that took hours and eventually seemed to run out of available disk space. Permitting a disk compression finally overcame the problem. I'm a little hesitant to allow the recent update of Parallels, after reading some experiences of update problems on the forum (some users had to reinstall the program). As long as its working well, I'm tempted to skip the update.

I'm not an expert on operating systems and software but I'm not a neophyte either. I was a Windows user for many years and when The new Apple laptop I received recently is great but I missed several things that Windows had. I did some research and decided to they Parallels Desktop. I was very pleasantly surprised at the functionality and easy of use. I loaded the Windows software I already had and can now reap the benefits of the Apple machine as well as the functionality of the Windows software I am used to using. It a great product. My only complaint is the sketchy instructions provided when upgrading from one version of Parallels to a new version.

I have not used any software to run Windows on my Mac in a long time. I need to use Quickbooks Pro (PC product) and installing Parallels was the best way to go. I asked a PC (gasp) consultant to help me set up Parallels and Microsoft 8 on my computer.

I seriously almost charged HIM: he was so excited about Parallels and could not stop playing with it. Fast, easy to use, and I can run BOTH my Mac and my Windows programs at the SAME TIME!

I love how easy it is for me to access files and images in EITHER Windows or Mac. The two run, basically seamless and I do not lose my PC files to some C:Drive ether. Great program. Beautifully integrated into my Mac, and I do not need to know a PC to use.

P.S. be sure to learn the key commands for "right click" and other common PC mouse-use. You do not need any PC externals, just slightly different key commands. EASY PEASY!

Since 1996, I have used Use Quicken for my business and Personal Life as well. I can't function without it. It works for me in so many ways. Quicken for MAC can't even write checks, and gets poor reviews.
I do my own Business and Personal Taxes using Turbo-Tax. Turbo-Tax for MAC isn't rated well either.
But my wife and my son insisted I convert to MAC, and every Friend my age was doing the same.
Parallel was the clincher. It made the conversion a breeze. I can use Quicken and TurboTax on windows. I can switch back and forth and keep both open. I am sure there is much more I could be doing with Parallel, but I am thrilled. I love the MAC, and I don't have to convert to the MAC versions.

Parallels is a great way to seamlessly use your computer to the fullest. They have done all the work to make everything easy and to give you a LOT of options when it comes to how you like to interact with your system(s). My only suggestion to prospective buyers out there is to install your copy of Windows via Bootcamp first. If you want to 'game' or are doing something which requires a little more system performance than the virtual machine can handle it is good to have a dedicated space to do that with one install.

If there is a native Mac application, go for it. If you have a Windows application that you cannot give up Parallels is the perfect companion. There is no need to reboot. Just open Parallels (I have installed Windows-7). It works as well, or better than Windows on PC). I usually leave it in the background so that I can open it immediately but it actually boots extremely fast anyway. Highly recommended.

Beyond the fact that it lets me run all manner of Windows apps on my MacBook Pro, it also allows me to substantially avoid all the annoying tile garbage Windows 8 tries to force; right-click on the dock shortcut lets me avoid the terrible new start menu. Combine this with Coherence Mode and I can almost pretend I'm not running it at all!

In all seriousness, this is a great piece of software. I've had no compatibility problems at all, and the few glitches I've seen can be resolved by switching the virtual machine back into windowed mode. It's not even much overhead; my Windows Steam install can run the parts of my library that won't work in OSX without missing a beat, although admittedly I'm not trying to run Farcry or anything.

I use Parallels Desktop 9 with Windows and Debian Linux VMs. It's a very stable, fast and convenient product.

Firstly, powerful MacBook Pro and Parallels allowed me to forego Boot Camp completely and just log into work from a VM using Citrix Receiver: everything remains very responsive even in screen resolution that combines an HD monitor and a Retina display in "more space" mode. Haven't tried any games yet.

Secondly, device support is great. It's very easy to switch a USB smart card reader or an ext4-formatted partition for example from OS X to a VM (or back). I also have a Thunderbolt docking station and haven't noticed any difference in stability or performance between devices connected directly or via that station.

Finally, features. Everything I need is there: full screen (either single monitor or spanning multiple monitors), isolation or sharing with Mac, ISO file boot up, etc.

I had to contact customer service, initially by email and then on IM, to figure out how to switch a VM to full screen in native 1920x1080 resolution on an external full HD monitor. They were patient and walked me though necessary settings quickly.

One thing that I had to adjust to was that not all keyboard shortcuts from Windows work unchanged in a Windows VM, but I got the hang of it (e.g. if Control-... doesn't do what it's supposed try Command-Control-...). PD9 probably has to appease OS X here so I don't blame them.

I recently received a brand new Macbook Air as a late Christmas gift, but a lot of my software is Windows only still, including my copy of Photoshop Design Premium, which I can't afford to purchase new anymore. My Mac doesn't have the hard disk space to effectively bootcamp anything (128GB SSD), so enter Parallels running on an external USB Hard Drive. I now have Photoshop, MS Word, and even my games (Skyrim ;p) which just about as well on my new Macbook Air as they did on my old Gateway 17-inch FX gaming laptop, and they integrate seamlessly. I especially love how you can slide between the two operating systems so effortlessly, which comes in particularly handy when I'm running a manuscript through my editing program which is only available for Windows at the moment (SmartEdit-- I use the lite version).

It feels like I have my computer back, only now more portable than ever. It doesn't slow down the software much, and even running Skyrim, the only way to run it better would be through bootcamp. It's also really fun if you want to give Linux or even Android a spin, as I was able to download the Android operating system and install my Amazon apps in the virtual machine (although it doesn't give access to Google Play yet [this would be so cool to have]).

Parallels 9 is tuned to performance and seamless integration, and it doesn't take too long to familiarize yourself with the details of how it runs. Plus, the virtual disks are easy to move and backup seeing as they appear as a single file.

I've been using Parallels Desktop for a few years now and I think it's great. I was a heavy Windows user then went into graphic design for which I needed both Mac and Windows expertise. Parallels has allowed me to be able to use much of my old Windows software where necessary while using my core applications on the Mac.

After I used the trial version for a couple days I designed to buy the product and I recommended it to my company managers, and they quickly made the decision I made.
PD9 provides some nice feature like 'coherence mode', and allowed to most mac gesture in window. But the one I loved the most is its performance. It is the fastest virtual machine I've ever used, I could even play 3D games.

I do need to run Office 2013 for my dayly business, so got an office365 account and parallels and I really do love it: win8 on a MacPro is much faster than on all native machines (shut down and reboot in less than 20 seconds), all things work like magic (network is fine, printing is doing, even clipboard works seamlessly: all the things you want integrated are done perfectly with the parallels platform, so I really do recommend to invest the 80 (or something) bucks and forget about all hazzle, since there is none.

I've been running Windows for many years (Latest 8.1), and when I got an Apple IMAC, I continued to run it under Bootcamp. Each time I upgraded the Windows software, there were a number of technical (driver, etc.) problems. Sometimes these would be solved with Apple Bootcamp updates, and some not. Upgrading to 8.1 did me in. Always thought the programs I was running under Windows would run too slow as a VM. Not so. While there is a very slight degradation with some video apps, Photoshop etc. run great. Install was easy, and with the exception of a sound problem, fixed quickly by the support team, I'm not only happier with my IMAC, but with the way Windows performs running Parallels. Windows loads faster under Parallels than it did under Bootcamp.

I like it, however, switching back and forth between Mac and PC modes is not that smooth, especially if you are using remote desktop on the PC mode.

  • A more excellent way than running Windows on a PC

First of all, I NEVER write reviews, although I have rated products, but rarely even then. I was really having problems trying to 'force myself' to depend on W8. I say this because I believe that W8 was 'intentionally' designed as a 'must upgrade' hardware and software so that 'everybody wins' as far a tech companies, while the user 'loses' both money and patience.
Many of the older programs that run on XP were, and still are, EXCELLENT. Many of the companies that develop a 'newer and better' version of their program are very deceptive in their advertisements. Many programs are simply bloatware (IMO) that are 'made to appear' as better, but are not.
I have many years of records in Quickbooks. I use Quickbooks 2006, and Intuit has 'upgraded' this product each year, and it is not better, but 'inferior' IMO.
When i found that I could not install Quickbooks (QB) in W8, I also had been running my QB in Parallels for Mac, simply as a backup. When trying to install QB in a W8 pc, it simply would not install; Microsoft 'forces' you to buy W8 Professional just to try it's 'compatibility mode' and you end up 'hoping' you can run QB and other older programs. So you are a couple of hundred dollars more than you were.
Parallels running on my Mac is excellent, although I am having a few problems figuring out a solution to a few quirks, but I think is just me not knowing the program.
If I have to go away from the Mac for a short time, and come back to my work (I am running Windows 7 Professional and have been able to get EVERY one of my older programs working on Parallels) a short time later, I find that my mouse and keyboard freeze up. So I have to reboot the system. To be fair, I need to state that I am using my Windows keyboard and mouse rather than the keyboard and mouse that came with my Mac.
All in all, I am VERY pleased with Parallels and I think it would (hopefully) even run faster if i upgraded OS X to Mavericks, but I have read of some problems on the Parallel's forums people are having with Parallels when upgrading to OS X Mavericks.

One of the things I am really pleased with are some of the settings whereby you can make your system run faster on the iMac. That is the one thing I am astute about; that the system runs quickly. As a side note, before I began using Parallels, I tried VMware and found once I tried Parallels, that Parallels 7 ran SIGNIFICANTLY faster than VMWare Fusion.
I highly recommend Parallels to anyone that wants to run Windows rather than on a PC.

Last time I used Parallels was version 4. This version is a significant improvement on that product. Only been using it a few weeks or I'd give it a 5-star rating. I only use it for home purposes, but that's enough for me.

I bought parallels mainly for software development for Windows. I am working on a graphics engine and Parallels 9 was the only virtualization package that had a DX10-compliant virtualized GPU so the choice was easy. To sweeten the deal, Parallels 9 is super fast on my mid-2012 non-retina MacBook Pro, although I do recommend using an SSD when you do any sort of virtualization.
