SWsoft’s 100th Customer, Catalog.com to Deploy HSPcomplete Automation System across Thousands of Servers, Signaling Industry’s Shift to Virtual Private Servers (VPS) Hosting Plans
S. SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. December 17, 2002 – Catalog.com, the world’s first Web hosting company, today announced it will use SWsoft’s Virtuozzo OS virtualization technology with the HSPcomplete full-business lifecycle hosting automation solution to manage thousands of servers and customers and add Virtual Private Servers to its service offering. A top-ranked hosting provider with over 50,000 customers, Catalog.com developed extensions to the Apache Web server in 1994 and created the ‘shared hosting’ industry, which allowed multiple customers on one server and eventually grew into the $500M virtual web hosting industry.
Through a technology licensing agreement with SWsoft to offer highly customizable Virtuozzo-based services, Catalog.com has plans for an even bigger market for Virtual Private Servers. Catalog.com’s Virtual Private Server or VPS services combine the best of dedicated and shared hosting, integrating the full control, guaranteed Quality of Service and flexibility of a dedicated server with the benefits of advanced shared hosting, which includes a Web-based GUI for easy system administration, freedom from hardware problems, and low cost.
“Virtual web hosting created a paradigm shift in hosting pricing in 1994, bringing hosting to millions of small to medium businesses (SMBs) that needed online storefronts,” said Internet hosting visionary and CEO of Catalog.com, Robert Crull. “As e-commerce becomes a standard mechanism for business, SMBs need available and dynamic Websites. To date, the management complexity and total cost of ownership of dedicated hosting has been a barrier. Catalog.com’s Virtuozzo-based Virtual Private Servers offers our customers the perfect solution.”
Using SWsoft’s HSPcomplete to automate their hosting operations for thousands of servers, Catalog.com now has a single point of management for resellers, customer accounting, billing, IP addresses and other system resources. On each HSPcomplete-enabled server, Catalog.com can support one or hundreds of customers in fully-isolated "virtual environments" and easily drag and drop customers between physical machines. Once again ahead of the trend, Catalog.com has recognized Virtual Private Servers as a driving force in the revitalization of the Web hosting industry.
“Catalog.com is a pioneer in the Web hosting world and we are excited to help provide an automated infrastructure that supports their new Virtual Private Servers,” said Serguei Beloussov, CEO, SWsoft, Inc. “Virtuozzo enables the only true Virtual Private Server technology on the market, helping over 100 hosting providers to put 100s of customers per physical server, and giving each customer full root access with performance guarantees.”
“Virtual Private Server technology is blurring the line between shared and dedicated hosting,” offered IDC Senior Analyst Melanie Posey in a recent analysis of the Web hosting industry.
On top of Virtuozzo sits a set of graphical user interfaces (GUIs) for Catalog.com to manage all servers, IP addresses, customer accounting, resellers, domains and other system resources. The only system to include a billing solution integrated into the automatic account provisioning function, HSPcomplete allows Catalog.com’s customers to sign up and pay for new plans and services online, saving them time and money.
“Although Catalog.com has eight (8) years experience developing innovative hosting technologies, we decided to license Virtuozzo and HSPcomplete from our technology partner, SWsoft, and instead focus on selling and marketing our hosting products,” said Christian Henning, Director of Marketing, Catalog.com. “This approach saved us over $200,000, as compared to in-house development, and resulted in a solid product brought to market faster.”
With full root access, customized plug-ins, templating technology and extendability through an open API, Virtuozzo-powered virtual private servers (VPS) looks and performs like a standalone server. With the ability to support up to 64 GB RAM across 16 CPUs per VPS, Virtuozzo support most mission-critical applications; recent testing results at the IBM SPC center in San Mateo showed upwards of 2500 copies of Linux with Apache and over 20 instances of IBM DB2 could be independently run on a single IBM x370 server.
