Accounting isn’t the only department that needs to keep track of all the equipment owned by an organization. Apart from the balance-sheet relevance, effectively managing IT assets is essential for an organization’s safety and compliance.

IT should have a full overview at all times of which devices are moving about an internal network. These include both company-owned clients and mobile devices, as well as bring-your-own devices (BYOD) brought into the organization by employees. Whether or not these are present on the network with IT’s consent doesn’t matter for compliance and safety—IT needs to have access and insight.
