Instantly deploy Windows apps as HTML5 desktop applications

With cloud technology, businesses are now able to centrally host resources such as applications, data, and VDI desktops in a datacenter and publish them to any remote device, allowing them to proactively create and manage virtual offices across the globe. According to Gartner, the worldwide public cloud services market earned $175 billion in 2015. This value is expected to increase to $204 billion by the end of this year. According to IDC, the virtualization market was valued at $3 billion in 2015, with its value expected to increase to $4.6 billion by 2020, at a compound annual growth rate of 8.9%. IT is experiencing a huge transformation, with nearly all data, applications, hardware, and software moving into the virtual world, or a software-defined infrastructure. We’ve seen the latest movement in this direction with Microsoft’s new Windows Server 2016.

The virtual network

In a virtual network, resources are hosted on a central server using Windows Remote Desktop Services (RDS) or VDI, while the users access these resources from client devices. If the virtual network is public-facing, users can access these these resources from client devices outside of the local network. The remote client software should be installed on each device that requires access to the server. Because the client software is specific to the device OS and platform, businesses should ensure that the correct software version is installed on the client device. However, Parallels Remote Application Server (RAS) offers universal clientless access to server resources, which means you can use any device to connect to central resources hosted on the server.

The rise of HTML5-based web apps

In the virtual environment, all the clients should run the client software. However, when you are in an Internet cafe or when you try to access the server from a new device, this system won’t work. While you might be tempted to use clientless SSL VPN connections, the complexity in managing them is a challenge. Moreover, additional plug-ins are required. This is where HTML5-based web apps enter the picture.

Parallels Remote Application Server (RAS) HTML5 Client

HTML5 Desktop Application

Parallels Remote Application Server (RAS) offers an HTML5 Client that enables businesses to easily transform any Windows application into a web app. You don’t have to install the RDP client software on the end user devices. In addition, the installation of plug-ins such as Flash, Java, or Silver Light is not required. The only requirement is an HTML5-enabled browser, which nowadays covers almost every web browser available. Using this browser, users can simply access Windows applications as web apps from any location, anytime and from any device. The client devices can range from Windows and Mac to iOS and Android. Cross-functionality becomes easy. Moreover, using web apps with the Parallels HTML5 Client results in the rich rendering of graphics, augmented by a highly intuitive user interface. With SSL and a HTTPS gateway, connections are highly secure.

Parallels RAS originally offered two options for web access. You could either use the RAS Web Portal or opt for the HTML5 Gateway. Both options display the list of apps after successful authentication.

1) RAS Web Portal

After the successful authentication of the user, the portal displays the list of apps. However, the RAS portal first detects if the client software is installed and then launches apps using the corresponding native client. If the client software is not available, it will offer the client software. The RAS Web Portal has to be separately installed in the datacenter along with IIS and .NET Framework. It comes with a separate interface as well.

2) HTML5 Client

The HTML5 Client is a part of the Parallels Secure Client Gateway; you don’t have to install it separately. It is available by default and can be activated by enabling a checkbox from the intuitive RAS interface. The HTML5 Client launches all the apps within the browser window. Users do not need any additional plug-ins, software, or setup to get this up and running. All they need is the HTML5 Client URL and their domain user login credentials.

HTML5 desktop application browsing enriched with Parallels RAS v15.5

The new Parallels RAS v15.5 takes this flexibility a step forward. With this new version, transforming any Windows application into a web app is a cakewalk. It ports the Parallels Web portal features into the HTML5 Client, which means businesses can enjoy RemoteFX accelerated graphics directly from their browser.

From an administrative perspective, Parallels RAS v15.5 eliminates the need for IIS, simplifying IT management. The HTML5 Client is available by default. You can manually enable it while adding a gateway to the site, or manually go to the gateway of any site and configure the properties. The new RAS v15.5 allows you to use the Parallels client within the gateway. You can even embed the web client into other web pages. As an end user, you can simply type the link in the HTML5 browser address bar and access the resources after successful authentication.

Parallels RAS is a comprehensive tool for virtualization networks. It is easy to deploy and use. As most features come auto-configured, IT management is simplified. Most importantly, it is significantly more affordable than the competition.

So what are you waiting for? Convert your Windows applications to web apps without writing a single line of code today with the Parallels RAS free trial.
