Why are Virtual Applications Still a Hot Topic?
The massive computers of yesteryear became smaller and more powerful, and then they became portable; mobile phones became smart, packing more power and more opportunities for networking—and it’s clear that the direction of the technological revolution is more portability, more mobility, and more power to the user, connecting users to who they are and to what they do, constantly. Virtual applications are quickly becoming the next step in this revolutionary stride for sustained improvement, integrated, as they are, with concepts such as the digital mesh and the Internet of Things.
What are the Virtual Applications?
Strictly speaking, a virtual application is an application or program that is run on a device without necessarily being installed on it. This means that application virtualization utilizes cloud systems to allow computers, phones, or thin clients to access data and programs available on other devices, thereby creating an accessible virtual enactment of these programs from this device.
Obviously, this kind of technology opens up many different opportunities, not least of all in the workplace. The added portability that this technology offers adds layers to what can be done, to what can be accomplished, and to the ways it can be accomplished. Because virtual applications allow users to access and utilize their data safely from whichever platform they choose—even if this platform happens to be their smartphone—a more mobile centrality is created, one that meshes the fixed and cumbersome with the mobile and fluid.
The mobility that virtual applications offer means that sharing data becomes easier and more instantaneous. Companies allowing a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy, in particular, would see immediate benefits not only because virtual applications would help them cut costs and salvage countless man hours, but also because the company’s culture would be revolutionized in the wake of this more granular, collective personal space. Presentations and meetings would change, for one, and so too would the way tasks are assigned, information distributed, and the way workers themselves go about their business, removing the limits on their office space—or indeed their personal space.
Productivity is at the beating heart of virtual application technology; it enables it, harnesses it, and catalyzes it. It extracts more from the devices that people use, and in so doing, spins the wheel of innovation forward and onward to progress, improving the working environment for everyone, in every conceivable way.
