Parallels Desktop 4.0 for Mac Support

The procedure of upgrading from Parallels Desktop 3.0 to Parallels Desktop 4.0 for Mac comprises a number of steps: obtaining an upgrade activation key, installing the new version of Parallels Desktop, converting the virtual machines, and upgrading Parallels Tools.

Note: Due to the recent version launch, please expect extended delays while we continue to work around the clock to handle all requests.

Preparation Steps

To prepare for upgrading, you should shut down the virtual machines that are running or suspended, and quit Parallels Desktop. If you experience problems with performing any of these actions, see Troubleshooting Wizard or Activation and registration questions and answers.

Installing the New Version

You do not have to remove the previous version of Parallels Desktop before the upgrade: the installer will remove it automatically before installing Parallels Desktop 4.0 for Mac.

To install Parallels Desktop 4.0 for Mac:

  1. Download the installation DMG file from the Parallels website.
  2. Open the installation DMG and double-click Install Parallels Desktop. The Parallels Desktop installer will launch.
  3. Follow the installer’s instructions to complete the installation of Parallels Desktop 4.0 for Mac.

When the installation of Parallels Desktop 4.0 for Mac is complete, the Applications folder opens in Finder. Start Parallels Desktop and proceed to activating. If you experience problems with performing any of these actions, see Troubleshooting Wizard.

Activating Parallels Desktop with an Upgrade Key

When you start Parallels Desktop, you will be prompted to activate the product. The upgrade users may need to confirm that they have a valid permanent key for the previous version:

  • If you activated Parallels Desktop 3.0 with a permanent activation key, you will need to enter the upgrade key only.
  • If you activated Parallels Desktop 3.0 with a trial activation key, you will be prompted to enter both keys: the key you used with the previous version and the upgrade key for the 4.0 version.

To activate Parallels Desktop:

  1. Click Activate Product to open the activation dialog.
  2. Type your name, your company name, and the upgrade activation key into the respective fields.
  3. Click OK to activate Parallels Desktop.

When Parallels Desktop is activated, register your copy of Parallels Desktop to be able to download updates and store your activation key on the Parallels web server. If you experience problems with performing any of these actions, see Troubleshooting Wizard.

Converting Your Virtual Machines to the New Format

Parallels Desktop 4.0 for Mac uses a new format of virtual machines. Your virtual machines created in Parallels Desktop 3.0 need to be converted into the new format.

  1. When you start Parallels Desktop, the welcome window appears. Click the Start using Parallels Desktop link to view the list of virtual machines you used in Parallels Desktop 3.0.
  2. Double-click the virtual machine you wish to convert.
  3. Choose the action to perform.
    • Back Up and Convert. Choose this action to create a backup copy of the virtual machine before you convert it. If you need to start this virtual machine in Parallels Desktop 3.0, you will be able to restore it from the backup.
    • Convert. Choose this action to convert the virtual machine without creating a backup copy of it. We strongly recommend to back up your virtual machine to be able to use it even if problems occur during the conversion.

Note: Due to the recent version launch, please expect extended delays while we continue to work around the clock to handle all requests.

  1. If you have chosen Back Up and Convert, you need to specify the location for the backup files. Once you have specified the location, the virtual machine is backed up and then converted to the 4.0 format.

When the virtual machine is converted, you can start using it in Parallels Desktop 4.0 for Mac. If you experience problems with performing any of these actions, see Troubleshooting Wizard.

Upgrading Parallels Tools

If you have Parallels Tools installed in the converted virtual machine, you should reinstall them after the upgrade.

  • In Windows virtual machines, the Parallels Tools installer will be launched automatically once the virtual machine is started.
  • In Linux virtual machines, X Server may fail to start after the upgrade, which means that you may need to upgrade Parallels Tools manually in text mode.

If you experience problems with performing any of these actions, see Troubleshooting Wizard.

Note: Due to the recent version launch, please expect extended delays while we continue to work around the clock to handle all requests.
