From our humble beginnings as a small startup, Parallels Inc. always envisioned a new way to approach virtualized computing. The story behind Parallels dictates a company filled with dozens of industry firsts introduced with every new product release over the years. This unrivaled leadership in innovation began in 2006 with the introduction of mainstream virtualization on Mac® computers by utilizing the Apple®-Intel architecture. How Parallels Inc. (and Parallels Desktop) Got Started:
The original Parallels team started with 15 people in 1999. Like most businesses, Parallels grew and eventually needed funding. Parallels was acquired by SWsoft in 2004, and the company had to completely re-engineer Parallels Desktop from scratch. However, re-engineering the software from the ground up ensured a successful future for the company. Nikolay Dobrovolskiy (now our vice president of virtualization) and his colleagues worked on beta versions of Parallels Desktop from 2000 to 2006. However, when Apple switched to Intel-based Mac computers in 2005, Parallels Desktop became famous virtually overnight. While the advantages of Parallels Desktop were obvious from the beginning—namely, the ability to avoid re-starting your Apple computer each time you transitioned from macOS to Windows and vice versa—achieving this goal on a larger scale required a visit to Apple in Cupertino, California.
In 2008, Dobrovolskiy and Sergei Beloussov traveled to Apple and met the then-developer of macOS, Bertrand Serlet, and marketing executive Phil Schiller to obtain approval for Parallels Desktop to join the Apple Sales Channel. While Serlet and Schiller initially declined to move forward, infamous Apple founder Steve Jobs joined the meeting and dismissed his coworkers conclusions. He began pelting Dobrovolskiy and Beloussov with questions regarding the virtualization solution and their intentions moving forward. After constructive reflection, Jobs concluded with, “I think it makes sense!”
Parallels Desktop then joined the Apple Sales Channel and launched as the only solution for running Windows on Mac. The rest is history.
Whether it’s utilizing Apple-Intel architecture in 2006 or bringing Microsoft’s virtual assistant Cortana to Mac in 2015, this continued focus on the customer experience has spurred the growth of Parallels by supporting over 60 different guest operating systems and solutions for users everywhere. Growing exponentially from a small startup to a global leader has given Parallels the resources to continue to provide a better product for our users. Parallels continues to strategically solve complex engineering and user-experience problems so that an application’s location is irrelevant. Parallels makes it not only easy but also cost-effective to use applications wherever they might be—local, remote, in the private datacenter, or in the cloud.
