Just Released – Parallels Desktop for Chrome OS Runs on Even More Devices as It Adds Support for AMD Processors

Here’s some great news for organizations that have been equipping their people with Chromebook and Chromebox devices. Parallels® Desktop for Chrome OS, which enables Chrome OS devices to run full-featured Windows applications with or without an Internet connection, will now start supporting both Intel and AMD processor-driven devices. This means, you will now enjoy greater flexibility in choosing the right device(s) for your workforce or community.

In line with this new development, Parallels Desktop for Chrome OS will be supporting AMD Ryzen 5 and AMD Ryzen 7 processors as well as 12 new Chromebook and Chromebox devices from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo moving forward. This is in addition to the Intel devices already supported by Parallels Desktop for Chrome OS, which brings the total number of supported devices to 21. A complete list of supported devices can be found at the end of this article.

It’s worth noting that Parallels Desktop for Chrome OS isn’t the only Parallels-developed solution that enables Windows applications to run on Chrome OS devices. It’s also possible to run full-featured Windows applications without installing them locally on the devices themselves by using Parallels® Remote Application Server (RAS). We’ve talked about that extensively in the white paper “Chromebook Adoption Increased By 17% in 2020”.

“With Parallels Desktop for Chrome OS, we make it simple for enterprises and education organizations to securely run fully featured Windows applications on powerful new Chrome Enterprise devices, both online and offline,” said Christa Quarles, Chief Executive Officer of Corel.

Many organizations have already been leveraging the productivity-boosting capabilities of Parallels Desktop for Chrome OS. Some education organizations, like Wheelers Lane Primary School in the UK, are using it to run legacy Windows applications on Chrome OS devices.

“We chose Chromebooks as the most cost-effective devices for our school but many teachers needed SMART Notebook, a legacy Windows application for creating dynamic lessons, and preferred to work with full-featured Windows apps rather than the feature-limited online versions,” said John Byron, IT manager of Wheelers Lane Primary School, United Kingdom. “Parallels Desktop for Chrome OS enabled our teachers to easily run the full-featured Widows apps they need on their Chromebooks. Within a week and a few working hours, our Chromebooks were equipped with Parallels’ software which was so simple that no training was needed to use it.”

This is a huge benefit because, normally, Chromebooks and Chromebox devices are not capable of running Windows applications, let alone legacy applications, locally. With Parallels Desktop for Chrome OS, these organizations can continue enjoying the cost-efficiency of Chrome OS devices without sacrificing access to business-critical Windows applications.

Other organizations like Family Health Centers in the US, whose employees travel frequently, are delighted by the fact that they can now remain productive anywhere they go. They’re able to do this through the portability and long battery life of Chromebooks combined with its newfound ability to run Windows apps, thanks to Parallels Desktop for Chrome OS.

Aside from the added support for AMD chips, Parallels Desktop for Chrome OS also brings greater functionality to popular video conferencing Windows applications like Zoom, Cisco Webex, and GoToMeeting through its new camera and microphone redirection capabilities. Through Parallels Desktop for Chrome OS, users can now fully leverage key features (depending of course on the application) like whiteboards, annotations, end-to-end encryption, remote control and others.

With more organizations now shifting to Chrome OS devices, the clamor for these devices to support Windows applications has grown even louder. Parallels Desktop for Chrome OS easily meets this need. And with its ability to support a wide range of devices, organizations now have more flexibility to meet their budgetary, performance, and portability requirements through a single solution.
