20 Years of Parallels Desktop
On June 15, 2026, Parallels Desktop celebrates its 20th anniversary.
I still remember the excitement surrounding the launch of Parallels Desktop in 2006. Just 6 months ago, Apple released its first Intel Mac computers. Engineering has been working day and night to enable Mac users with the ability to run Mac applications side by side without rebooting. We knew we were solving a real problem for Mac users, but none of us could have predicted how loved and needed this solution would become.
What started as a breakthrough way to run Windows on a Mac without rebooting quickly became a defining technology for millions of users worldwide. Over the past two decades, Parallels Desktop has helped developers, IT professionals, students, creators, businesses, and enterprises seamlessly run Windows, Linux, and other operating systems alongside macOS.
From the early days of Intel Macs to another Apple's transition, now to Apple Silicon, Parallels Desktop has consistently pushed the boundaries of what is possible on a Mac.
Now, another transformation is underway. As AI reshapes how people work, create, and collaborate, we're focused on delivering the next generation of experiences that make powerful technology simpler, more accessible, and more productive.
As we celebrate 20 years of innovation, let's look back at some of the milestones that shaped the journey, and ahead to the opportunities that will define the future.
2006–2009: Making Windows on Mac Mainstream
2006 – Parallels Desktop launches on June 15, becoming the first virtualization solution to bring Windows and Mac together seamlessly (no reboot required) on an Intel Mac.
2007 – Parallels Desktop 3.0 wins Best in Show at Macworld. Innovations such as Coherence Mode redefine the experience by allowing Windows applications to run alongside Mac applications as if they were native. That same year, Steve Jobs highlights Parallels Desktop at Apple's WWDC as one of the three ways to run Windows on a Mac.
2008–2009 – Major advances in graphics, performance, and compatibility, including support for 32-bit and 64-bit virtual machines and Windows 7, make running Windows on Mac faster and more seamless than ever.
2010–2013: Expanding Beyond Consumers and Desktop
2010 – Full 64-bit support and deeper Mac integration further blur the line between Windows and macOS.
2011 – Parallels expands into enterprise IT with volume licensing and deployment package for organizations deploying Windows on Mac at scale. Parallels Transporter that allows migrating data and apps from Windows PCs has been released in the App Store. Parallels Desktop is spotted on NASA MacBook Pros used during the Curiosity Rover mission
2012–2013 – Parallels Access launches, extending Windows and Mac apps to mobile devices and marking Parallels’ move beyond the desktop.
2014–2017: Powering Professionals
2014–2015 – Pro Edition launches, bringing advanced capabilities for developers, testers, and power users. Windows 10 support added.
2016–2017 – Optimization for Retina displays, Touch Bar support for Windows apps, and the release of Parallels Toolbox redefine productivity on the Mac. Parallels Desktop is also now available in App Store.
2018–2021: The Apple Silicon Revolution
2018–2019 – Continued performance and graphics innovations support increasingly demanding professional workloads.
2020 – Parallels becomes one of the first virtualization providers to demonstrate Windows running on Apple's new M1-powered Macs. During Apple's WWDC introduction of Apple Silicon, Parallels Desktop was showcased running a virtual machine on a prototype Mac.
2021 – Native Apple Silicon support launches, enabling a new era of Windows and Linux virtualization on Mac.
2022–2026: Defining the Future of Virtualization on Mac
2023 – Microsoft recognizes Parallels Desktop as an authorized solution for running Arm versions of Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise in a virtual environment on Apple Silicon Macs.
2024 – Parallels Desktop Enterprise Edition launches, bringing enterprise-grade management and deployment capabilities to modern IT teams.
2026 – Twenty years after launch, Parallels Desktop serves millions of users worldwide and remains a leading solution for running Windows on Mac powering modern developer, enterprise, and hybrid workflows.
Looking Ahead
The technology landscape has changed dramatically since 2006. Macs have evolved from Intel processors to Apple Silicon. Windows has transformed across multiple generations. New workflows have emerged around cloud computing, mobile work, virtualization, and now artificial intelligence.
Through every major shift, Parallels Desktop has remained focused on a simple mission: making it easy for Mac users to run the applications and operating systems they need, without compromise.
Today, AI is helping Parallels Desktop move faster and aim higher - accelerating development, improving research, and enabling more ambitious innovation across our roadmap.
At the same time, centralized deployment, policy control, and simplified provisioning are turning virtualization into a scalable application delivery platform. The result is secure, fully managed environments delivered instantly, giving users the performance they expect and IT teams the control they require.
We're proud of the journey we've shared with our customers, partners, employees, and community over the last two decades. And while we're honored by the milestones that brought us here, we're even more excited about what comes next.
Here's to the next 20 years of innovation.
