Citrix Application Not Launching, No Error – Some potential reasons.

citrix application not launching no errorIt’s already hard enough to troubleshoot a Citrix failed application launch—it’s even more difficult when a Citrix application is not launching and no error message is generated. Whenever this happens, you don’t have a single clue where to start looking. This is a severe deficiency, considering how complex Citrix environments can be. Determining the cause of a Citrix application not launching with no error can be a very time-consuming process.

There are many places in the infrastructure to troubleshoot, but here are some of the areas you might want to look into.

A published application doesn’t launch when not in a desktop session

When the launch issue involves a published application but only occurs if the published application is outside a published desktop session (meaning it launches as normal when inside a published desktop session for the same user), this is likely caused by a design problem in Windows.

Basically, an issue like this can occur when you attempt to start a published application that relies on Windows’ Explorer.exe file. Unfortunately, Terminal Server RemoteApp sessions don’t support certain functions that might be needed in loading that published application. For example, TS RemoteApp sessions don’t process the Run and RunOnce registry entries as well as startup applications.

Because this, in turn, produces a problematic user profile, one workaround to this problem is to create the user profile by launching a full desktop session and then starting the runonce.exe file with the /AlternateShellStartup switch.

A published application doesn’t launch in a published desktop

In contrast to the previous scenario, there can also be instances when applications don’t launch when in a published desktop on XenApp but WILL launch outside the desktop.

In this scenario, try checking the registry settings of the affected users. If the following registry key is absent:

HKEY_Current_User\Software\Citrix\ICA Client\Engine\Lockdown Profiles

Go to a working profile, copy that key from there and see if that fixes the issue.

These are just two of the many possible issues that are behind a “Citrix application not launching no error” being generated.
