Revit on Mac: Parallels Desktop vs. VMware Fusion, UTM, and CrossOver

Can you run Revit on a Mac?

Autodesk does not make a native macOS version of Revit.

On an Intel Mac, Windows can run in a virtual machine and, on supported older systems, through Boot Camp. Apple silicon Macs work differently. An M-series Mac cannot boot the standard x64 version of Windows through Boot Camp, so Revit has to run inside Windows 11 Arm in a virtual machine or on another Windows computer accessed remotely.

Autodesk's current Revit 2027 system requirements include a recommended configuration for Apple computers. That configuration names Parallels Desktop, Windows 11, 32 GB of host memory, 16 GB of memory assigned to the virtual machine, and at least 4 GB of video memory allocated to Windows. Autodesk says the 16 GB VM allocation is usually sufficient for editing one model of roughly 300 MB on disk, although actual requirements vary by model.

That gives Parallels an obvious advantage, but it does not settle every part of the comparison. VMware Fusion can also run Windows 11 and provides accelerated 3D graphics. UTM can run Windows but lacks the graphics support Revit needs. CrossOver does not run Windows at all.

Here is how each option compares.

VMware Fusion Pro has been free for personal, educational, and commercial use since November 2024. UTM can be downloaded free from its website, while its Mac App Store version helps fund development. CrossOver is a paid product with a 14-day trial.

A Windows desktop appearing on your Mac is only the first step. Revit places demands on the guest operating system that ordinary productivity apps do not.

A complete Windows environment

Revit installs into Windows and depends on Microsoft components, licensing services, system settings, and the Windows file structure. Autodesk Desktop Connector, Autodesk Construction Cloud authentication, and many Revit add-ins bring their own requirements.

A full Windows virtual machine supplies that environment. Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion, and UTM all qualify on that basic point.

CrossOver does not. It translates Windows application calls so selected programs can run on macOS without installing Windows. That saves disk space and avoids the need for a Windows license, but it only works when the individual application and its dependencies are compatible.

DirectX 11 acceleration

Revit uses DirectX 11 for its hardware-accelerated graphics path. This matters when orbiting a 3D model, working with shaded views, displaying shadows, or moving through geometry-heavy projects.

If suitable graphics acceleration is unavailable, Revit may rely on software rendering. The application may still open, but performance can deteriorate as the model or view becomes more demanding.

Parallels Desktop and VMware Fusion both document DirectX 11 support. UTM says it does not currently provide GPU virtualization or 3D acceleration for Windows guests, including DirectX and OpenGL.

Enough memory for macOS and Windows

Memory is easy to underestimate because the Mac must run two operating systems at once.

Autodesk's recommended Revit 2027 Mac configuration calls for 32 GB of host memory and 16 GB assigned to the Windows virtual machine. A Mac with 16 GB total cannot give Windows that allocation while leaving enough memory for macOS, browsers, Teams, email, and other work apps.

For regular Revit work, 32 GB should be treated as a practical starting point rather than an extravagant upgrade. Larger models, linked files, point clouds, rendering tools, and several open applications may justify more.

Compatibility with the add-ins you use

Running Revit does not guarantee that every Revit add-in will work.

Apple silicon Macs run Windows 11 Arm. Windows can translate many x64 applications, but applications with specialized drivers, low-level system components, licensing tools, or particular graphics requirements may fail. Parallels also warns that some x86 and x64 applications remain incompatible with Windows 11 Arm.

Before choosing a VM, list the software your projects depend on. Include renderers, exporters, coordination tools, content managers, printer drivers, VPN software, and license servers. Check each vendor's documentation rather than assuming that “Windows compatible” also means “Windows 11 Arm in a virtual machine.”

CrossOver: not a dependable route for Revit

CrossOver is useful, but it solves a different problem.

Instead of creating a Windows virtual machine, CrossOver runs compatible Windows software through a commercial version of Wine. There is no Windows desktop running in the background and no Windows operating system to maintain.

For a supported utility, business application, or game, that approach can work well. Revit is a poor candidate because its installer and runtime depend on a broad set of Windows components. Professional workflows add another layer of uncertainty through add-ins, licensing systems, Autodesk services, and graphics tools.

CodeWeavers has database pages for Revit, including Revit 2025, but the presence of a database entry should not be mistaken for a supported configuration. The Revit 2025 page does not provide solid evidence that the current application works reliably enough for production use.

You may be able to install part of Revit or launch a particular release after experimentation. That is not a sensible foundation for project work with deadlines and shared models.

CrossOver verdict: Use it for Windows applications that CodeWeavers lists as working. Do not select it as your Revit solution.

UTM: Windows works, but Revit's graphics do not

UTM is a capable open-source virtualization app. It can run Windows 11 Arm on Apple silicon and x64 versions of Windows on Intel Macs. Its gallery also provides a Windows 11 template that reduces some of the initial configuration work.

Windows isn't the issue. It is the virtual graphics hardware available to Windows.

UTM states that it does not currently support GPU emulation or virtualization for Windows guests. Hardware-accelerated DirectX and OpenGL are unavailable.

That limitation is manageable for software such as:

  • Microsoft Office
  • Browser-based tools
  • Accounting or administrative applications
  • Development environments that do not require Windows GPU acceleration
  • Older software with modest display requirements

Revit is less forgiving. A project may install and open, but 3D views and other graphics-heavy parts of the application cannot use the accelerated path Autodesk expects.

The absence of DirectX acceleration also makes performance difficult to judge based on installation alone. A small sample model may appear usable while a linked, detailed project exposes the bottleneck.

UTM involves more hands-on setup than Parallels Desktop. Users may need to choose the correct architecture, configure the virtual machine, supply installation media, and install guest tools. That is reasonable for an experienced individual. It becomes harder to support when several architects need matching environments.

UTM verdict: Good for many Windows tasks. Not recommended for professional Revit work because Windows guests lack hardware-accelerated DirectX.

VMware Fusion: a real alternative, with one important gap

VMware Fusion deserves a more serious look than UTM or CrossOver. Fusion Pro runs full Windows virtual machines on both Intel and Apple silicon Macs. On an Apple silicon Mac, Fusion 13.5 and later can download and install Windows 11 through the Fusion interface. Current Fusion documentation also lists accelerated DirectX 11 support for compatible Windows guests.

It is also free for commercial use. That can make Fusion attractive to students, independent professionals, and firms that want to test Revit without buying another virtualization license. VMware reaffirmed the free commercial, educational, and personal licensing when it released Fusion 26H1 in May 2026.

So why not recommend Fusion outright?

The gap is in Autodesk's Revit-specific documentation. Autodesk's broad Mac software page says it supports a number of products in virtualized environments, including Parallels Desktop and VMware Fusion. The current Revit 2027 system requirements page is more specific. Its recommended configuration for Apple computers names Parallels Desktop, not Fusion.

That distinction matters most to firms that need a documented standard. If a project team encounters a problem, IT staff may prefer to begin from the exact setup Autodesk lists for Revit.

That does not prove that Revit cannot run in Fusion. Fusion supplies Windows 11 and DirectX 11, which are key pieces of the puzzle. It means organizations should test their actual workflows before deploying widely.

A useful Fusion test should include more than launching Revit. Open representative projects and check:

  • 3D navigation in detailed views
  • Linked Revit and CAD files
  • Worksharing or cloud models
  • Printing and PDF output
  • Autodesk Desktop Connector
  • Required add-ins
  • Sign-in and licensing
  • Sleep, suspend, and VM recovery behavior

Test on the same Mac configuration employees will receive. Results from a small sample file on a high-memory Mac tell you little about a 16 GB Mac opening a live project.

VMware Fusion verdict: A credible free option for testing and lighter Revit needs. Firms should validate it carefully because Autodesk's current Revit-specific Mac configuration names Parallels instead.

Parallels Desktop: the clearest documented option

Parallels Desktop has the strongest case for Revit because Autodesk includes it in the current Revit requirements.

For Revit 2027 on an Apple computer, Autodesk's recommended configuration specifies Parallels Desktop, Windows 11, 32 GB of host memory, 16 GB for the virtual machine, and at least 4 GB of video memory assigned to Windows. The same table covers Intel processors and Apple silicon chips.

Microsoft also identifies specified Parallels Desktop releases as authorized solutions for running Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise Arm in a virtual environment on Apple silicon Macs.

Windows setup requires less manual work. On Apple silicon, Parallels Desktop can download and install Windows 11 Arm. The user does not need to find an ISO, choose an emulated hardware profile, or assemble the VM one setting at a time. On Intel Macs, recent Parallels releases can also create a Windows 11 VM through an automated process. You still need to handle Windows activation and licensing according to Microsoft's terms.

DirectX 11 covers Revit's documented graphics path. Parallels Desktop has supported DirectX 11 since version 15. That aligns with the graphics API Revit uses for hardware acceleration. “DirectX 11 support” should not be read as “the same graphics performance as a dedicated Windows workstation.” A virtual GPU shares the Mac's resources and does not behave like a discrete workstation card with native Windows drivers. For modeling, documentation, coordination, and many everyday Revit tasks, the configuration is workable when the Mac has enough memory. GPU-intensive rendering and very large models may justify a dedicated Windows workstation or remote rendering system.

macOS integration reduces small daily annoyances. Parallels Desktop can share folders, clipboard content, and input devices between macOS and Windows. Coherence mode can display Windows applications alongside Mac applications without keeping the full Windows desktop in view. These features do not make Revit calculate faster. They help with the surrounding work: moving downloaded families into Windows, copying notes from a Mac browser, opening project documentation, and switching between Revit and macOS communication tools.

Business editions give IT more control. A firm-wide rollout raises questions that a personal installation does not: Who assigns and recovers licenses? Which VM settings should users be allowed to change? How are updates handled? Can IT provide a standard Windows image? How are security policies enforced? Parallels offers business-oriented licensing and administration features for organizations managing multiple Macs. UTM is not built around centralized commercial deployment, and Fusion's free license does not by itself provide a Revit-tested company configuration.

Parallels does not guarantee every add-in

Revit may work while a renderer, exporter, authentication utility, or older plugin does not. Windows 11 Arm can run many x64 applications through translation, but Parallels acknowledges that some applications remain incompatible.

Ask each add-in vendor two separate questions:

  1. Does the current add-in support Windows 11 Arm?
  2. Does the vendor support running it in Parallels Desktop?

A "yes" to standard Windows 11 compatibility does not automatically answer either question.

Parallels Desktop verdict: The strongest option for regular Revit use on a Mac because it is the VM named in Autodesk's current Revit Apple-computer configuration. Add-ins and GPU-heavy workflows still require individual checks.

Apple silicon and Intel Macs are not the same case

A single recommendation can hide an important architectural difference.

Apple silicon Macs

An M-series Mac runs the Arm edition of Windows 11. Revit and many add-ins may use Windows' built-in translation for x64 applications. The VM itself must also be designed for Apple silicon. Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion, and UTM can all run Arm guest operating systems. CrossOver skips the guest OS and tries to translate the application directly.

Apple silicon users should pay close attention to:

  • Windows 11 Arm support
  • x64 application translation
  • Plugin licensing systems
  • Required drivers
  • GPU-dependent companion applications

Intel Macs

Intel Macs can run x64 Windows virtual machines. Some supported models can also use Boot Camp, which runs Windows directly rather than inside macOS.

That removes the Arm translation layer, although an older Intel Mac may still be slower than a newer Apple silicon system. Battery age, thermal limits, available memory, and the specific processor can matter more than the virtualization brand.

Autodesk still refers users to information about both Boot Camp and Parallels in its Revit requirements. Owners of older Intel Macs should compare the cost of upgrades and software against the cost of a Windows workstation before investing heavily in the setup.

The practical answer

Parallels Desktop is the most defensible choice for a Mac user who needs Revit regularly. Autodesk names it in the current Revit 2027 Apple-computer configuration, and its DirectX 11 support meets Revit's documented graphics requirement.

VMware Fusion is the closest alternative. It costs nothing, installs Windows 11 on Apple silicon, and supports DirectX 11. It deserves a proper trial rather than a quick dismissal. Its weakness is the lack of a Fusion configuration in Autodesk's current Revit-specific Mac requirements.

UTM can run Windows, but its lack of Windows GPU acceleration rules it out for serious Revit work. CrossOver is farther from the mark because it does not provide a full Windows guest and has no dependable current Revit configuration.

None of these choices removes the need for testing. A BIM environment is more than Revit.exe. The decision has to account for models, cloud services, printers, add-ins, renderers, and the way your team exchanges files.
