Are you Ready for Internet of Things (IOT) ?

The Internet of Things : The 2014 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held in Las Vegas was dominated by Internet of Things (IOT) and web-connected products. This speaks volumes about the growing popularity of this new innovation. The acquisition of Home automation company, Nest Labs, by Google adds up to researchers belief that IOT is going to revolutionize the network technology in the coming 10 years Though IOT is not new, there is a significant progress in this segment in recent times. As IOT has become an inevitable option for most businesses, it is important for businesses to make the most out of it.

What is Internet of Things?

The Internet of Things or IOT is an entity comprising humans, machines, animals or objects with the ability to communicate with each other using a unique identifier. The embedded technology within these objects enables them to proactively interact with external and internal environments, allowing them to take and implement decisions without requiring human intervention. IOT connects new entities to the internet and when each object is digitalized, you can control it from anywhere.

According to Kevin Ashton who is believed to have coined the phrase ‘The Internet of Things’, “All the data present in the Internet is captured by humans who are constrained with limited time, accuracy and attention and this has affected the quality and accuracy of data. IOT can break these barriers, connecting more places, objects and platforms for quick and efficient communication of data.”

IOT Examples

A home automation system is an example of this innovation. For instance, heaters can sense your arrival and turn on the heater 30 minutes before you enter the room. A light bulb or a fan can turn itself on or off when you enter the room. The coffee machine can brew your coffee when you need it. Your refrigerator can check available groceries and order them, if required. As of now, IOT is dominated by machine-to-machine (M2M) communication products.  As IOT is mostly used in commercial applications, it is also referred to as Industrial Internet. Today, smart phones have been widely used to control objects within the IOT using customized apps.

Issues with IOT

While IOT is revolutionizing the way people perform day-to-day activities, there are several challenges as well. First of all, objects within the network need power and supplying battery power to all these objects is a huge requirement. Secondly, privacy of personal data is at risk. As you purchase a product, your transaction history can reveal lot of information about your personal life. There are other types of challenges as well. For instance, consider a chip implant that monitors your health and proactively gives medicine. Any virus attack or malfunction of the device can cause devastating effects.

Another major concern is data security. As smart phones are extensively used as objects in IOT, data gets stored in the memory card and emails get archived in the device. Hackers can easily get access to this data. Moreover, data can be shared between other members of IOT. Deeply embedded endpoints within an IOT are designed for a specific mission and come with low power consumption, less computing resources, low memory and limited connectivity without the ability to authenticate credentials. Right from the booting sequence to access controls, device authentication to firewalling and patches, security solutions are to be implemented at every level. Moving into the private cloud can effectively deliver the required security for IOT networks. In a private cloud, data is securely managed and objects work with increased efficiency to increase overall revenues of businesses.

Security in Private Cloud Computing

The Private Cloud is essentially a Cloud Infrastructure that operates solely for a single organization or where the service access is limited to a specific group of people. Private Cloud Computing is comprised of networking, server, storage and management tools. This is most often managed internally but also can be hosted externally by a Managed Service Provider (MSP), which is then known as a Virtual Private Cloud.

The data, in the private cloud, never leave the organization, allowing companies to maintain sovereignty and control of access to data and enable the use of employees’ own mobile device without compromising security.
