The challengeDeliver secure access to institutional and legacy applications across distributed teams

La Junta de Protección Social (JPS) is a public institution in Costa Rica that administers lottery games and social programs to generate resources for social welfare organizations. Its users include internal employees across multiple departments, point-of-sale staff, system operators, and administrative staff who require secure, reliable access to corporate applications.

Operating in a hybrid environment with key systems hosted in local data centers and complementary services in the cloud, JPS needed a remote access layer that would deliver a consistent user experience across locations, devices, and networks.

JPS needed a solution that would:

JPS also needed to improve application availability, reduce administrative overhead, and minimize downtime.

The testCould Parallels RAS improve performance and manageability with minimal downtime?

JPS decided to implement a proof-of-concept test for Parallels RAS, which they described as straightforward, with clear wizards and intuitive configurations. They had a functional environment up and running within a few hours.

The test involved several functional and technical users, multiple institutional applications, and remote desktops to validate different load and user profiles. JPS assessed Parallels RAS for application publishing, full remote desktops, centralized management, security controls and authentication, and performance optimization.

JPS evaluated alternative approaches that were more complex and significantly more expensive, or offered less flexibility for a hybrid environment. Ultimately, JPS chose Parallels RAS for its ease of implementation, excellent performance, flexible licensing model, centralized administration with low complexity, and efficient technical support.

The solutionParallels RAS delivers centralized application publishing and remote desktops

JPS uses Parallels RAS daily to ensure necessary applications are available, publish institutional tools in a controlled manner, and provide remote desktops for areas that require mobility or special access. It also keeps operations running during unforeseen events.

The Authorized Parallels Channel partner in Costa Rica, InterHAND S.A., delivers and provides support for Parallels RAS for JPS. This direct, 24/7 service ensures the operational continuity and responsive assistance needed for an always-on public institution.

They’ve combined Parallels RAS with Windows Server infrastructure, corporate applications developed in .NET, and Microsoft SQL Server databases, along with security solutions, virtualization, and hybrid cloud services.

The resultImproved availability, reduced operational effort, and a consistent user experience

Since adopting Parallels RAS, JPS has reported:

  • Lower workstation maintenance costs by centralizing application installation, support, and updates
  • Faster deployments and updates by applying changes once in a centralized environment, reducing disruption for end users
  • Consistent and secure access to applications from authorized locations, with uniform experiences across devices and networks
  • Reduced reliance on high-performance PCs by centralizing processing and delivery
  • Clear, predictable licensing and simpler administration

By implementing Parallels RAS as a secure remote access and publishing layer in a hybrid infrastructure, JPS modernized application delivery for distributed teams. The result is a centralized, reliable platform that supports secure access to critical applications, simplifies administration, and strengthens operational continuity.
