Malta Internship 2021 for Parallels/Corel

In January 2020, the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 pandemic. This affected the way we live and the way we work. We are lucky because we develop software products that enable employees to work from home. At Parallels Malta, we already used work from home when needed, so we switched to doing this on a daily basis quickly. The impact on research and development (R&D) was close to zero, however, this affected our position on internships drastically. Most students were still getting used to this new reality and including new interns was quite difficult. At this point, we decided to postpone any new internships for 2021.

This year we discussed and organized ourselves for a new reality: internships where we don’t meet students face to face. Of course, this is a challenge, but where there is a will there is a way. With the help of our IT department, we set up all the required hardware and software, properly configured so that interns could work as if they were at the office. We interviewed students from the University of Malta (UOM) and the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology MCAST (some via the Malta Information Technology Agency (MITA) Student Placement Process) and selected those who were keen on working in our area of expertise.

This was the first time we started the induction and training sessions completely online. The experience was good. I can only say that I miss having a whiteboard while giving training sessions.

Interns are active in various departments of the R&D team, and we have others that will start at a later stage. We will train them in various aspects of the R&D cycle, including frontend development, backend development and manual or automation quality assurance engineering. All interns get training on all of the roles that we have in the R&D team, and then they are assigned to a team with a mentor as a reference point. Of course, the rest of the team is always willing to help, and this instills effective teamwork practices. Interns also participate in our regular meetings and are expected to contribute to the discussions.

Our target is to give interns a complete experience of how a structured R&D department in a software company operates. We believe that this helps students understand what the real job is all about and also helps us recruit the right students once they finish their studies.

We look forward to more successful intern experiences and are open to new applicants from the universities at any time.
